Son of Pinya King Minnanthu known as Athinkhaya Sawyun built the Kingdom city in 1315 AD. This city situated on the northwest of Mandalay on the west bank of Ayeyarwaddy River about 21 km from Mandalay. There are about 6000 Monasteries and many ancient Pagodas spotted on the west bank of Ayeyarwaddy in Sagaing Hills. Kaunghmudaw, U Min Thoneze, Ponyashin Pagodas are main attractions in Sagaing Hill.
Monywa is a city in central Myanmar and situated on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River, Mandalay Division. It lies 136 km north-west of Mandalay along the Mandalay-Budalin branch railway line. Monywa serves as a major trade center for India and Burma through Kalay Myo road and Chindwin river.The name Monywa comes from “Mon” meaning “cake or snack food” and “Ywa” which is the Myanmar word for village. There is a legend which says that in the old days a Myanmar king fell in love with a seller of cakes from this town and made her his queen.
From Thanboddhay Pagoda you can go by car about five miles along a good branch road to Po Khaung Taung. a small range of hills in the Monywa area. There you will see more unusual sights not found in other parts of Myanmar.First you should stop for a while in the fast growing forest of one thousand Bodhi trees (Ficus religiosa); this Bo or pipal tree is sacred to all Buddhists because Gaudama Buddha attained.Enlightenment while meditating under this tree.
Crossing the Chindwin river and taking one hour drive, on the west bank about 30km, there are famous rocky Phowin and Shweba hills with big niches and huge Buddha Images with fine roundabout steps carved out of the single rocky hills are from centuries age and worth for visiting.
Mingun is a town in Sagaing Region, northwest Myanmar (Burma), located 11 km up the Ayeyarwady River on the west bank from Mandalay. Its main attraction is the ruined MingunPahtodawgyi, monumental uncompleted stupa began by King Bodawpaya in 1790, considered to be world’s largest one if finished and the Mingun Bell. It is one of the most visited places in Mandalay and well known for its Mingun Bell cast in 1790 AD, weighing 90 tons, and also the largest ringing bell in the world. Opposite the Pagoda you will see remains of the colossal huge brick lions facing river.
